Alabama football drives the conversation here at the Rammer JammerSEC Country’s daily Alabama athletics recap, but we’ll cover news for every facet of the Crimson Tide. Every morning, we’ll be here for the latest on Alabama football, basketball and every sport on campus.

College Football Playoff

The first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings were announced, and Alabama is not No. 1. The Crimson Tide came in at No. 2, right behind fellow SEC team Georgia. The Bulldogs have been picking up a lot of steam over the weeks. Georgia has two wins over teams in the CFP Top 25, with the most impressive being a win against No. 3 Notre Dame earlier in the season. Alabama has its most difficult games ahead of it. The Crimson Tide face No. 19 LSU, No. 16 Mississippi State and No. 14 Auburn, all in November.

“The discussion was very close for teams three through seven, but I would say it was even closer for teams one and two,” said Kirby Hocutt, chairman of the College Football Selection Committee. “At the end of the day, it was the two wins against CFP top 25 for Georgia, especially the win over No. 3 Notre Dame, that gave Georgia the very slight edge over Alabama.”

Twitter had plenty of reactions to Alabama’s ranking. Our own Christopher Walsh believes the ranking is the best thing that could have happened to Alabama.

Happy birthday

Tuesday was a special day in the Alabama program and a reason to celebrate. Even though Alabama was snubbed in favor of Georgia, it was Saban’s 66th birthday. In honor of his birthday, wide receiver Calvin Ridley said the team had cupcakes. Alabama also honored the coach during the team meeting. During that meeting, defensive back Daniel Wright impressively sang Saban Happy Birthday.

Scared of LSU?

After a win against Arkansas last season, LSU running back Derrius Guice said Alabama was “scared” of LSU’s running game. He said that is why the Crimson Tide stacked the box on so many plays last season. With Alabama looming, Guice is at the center of LSU’s offense and is a big part of why the Tigers have won three straight. This week, Alabama players remember the comments he made and had a chance to respond.

The Cleveland Browns almost traded for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback A.J. McCarron, but the deal was not completed in time.
